Udall, Heinrich: Decision to Base Osprey in N.M. Shows Value of N.M. Air Force Bases

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Sens. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich welcomed news that Cannon and Kirtland Air Force bases will temporarily house a total of seven CV-22 Osprey until they can be permanently based to serve the U.S. Pacific Command. Air Force officials have advised the lawmakers’ offices that three CV-22s will be based at Cannon and four will be based at Kirtland.

“New Mexicans are proud of our unparalleled flying space and our contribution to a well-prepared military. This announcement is good news for Cannon and Kirtland Air Force bases as well as their nearby communities,” said Udall, who fights for resources for New Mexico’s military bases as a member of the Appropriations Committee. “The decision to temporarily base CV-22s at Cannon and Kirtland demonstrates the strength and value of our bases and the contribution they make toward keeping our nation safe.”

“The announcement to support additional CV-22s at Cannon and Kirtland Air Force bases for the next couple years is welcome news and demonstrates New Mexico’s critical role in protecting our national security,” Heinrich said. “Our military installations at Cannon and Kirtland help provide our armed forces with unparalleled training conditions and superior air space for the most versatile military missions. As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I will continue to work to ensure our state maintains its role in keeping our nation safe.”
