    Today, New Mexicans celebrated the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument Proclamation that was signed by President Barack Obama. U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich joined the president and Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell for the signing ceremony at the Department of Interior.

      U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) joined veterans, military families, and local leaders at the grand opening of the new Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Community-Based Outpatient Clinic in Raton, N.M. The new clinic covers 6,921 square feet, which is more than double the size of the current Raton VA clinic, and provides greater access to quality health care for veterans across northern New Mexico, including expanded primary care, primary mental health, laboratory, and telemedicine services.

        U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) toured Spaceport America, Virgin Galactic, and SpaceX in Sierra County where he was briefed on the facility’s infrastructure update and commercial space policy. The senator toured the Spaceport Operations Center, Virgin Galactic’s LEED Gold certified Gateway to Space building, and met with SpaceX staff at their operations vertical launch area.

          U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) toured NASA’s White Sands Test Facility (WSTF) east of Las Cruces, N.M., to discuss its latest mission projects and space programs. WSTF conducts simulated mission duty cycle testing to develop numerous full-scale propulsion systems. The scientific investigation of explosion phenomena at WSTF is aimed at improving safety at launch facilities and other areas where hazardous materials are used.

              U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) hosted a roundtable discussion with students at Western New Mexico University to address student loan debt and other barriers that exist for students and families. Senator Heinrich has consistently fought to keep higher education within reach for all New Mexicans. He voted to pass the Bipartisan Student Loan Certainty Act, a bill that lowers and caps interest rates on federal student loans, and protects borrowers from dramatic increases in the future.
