We must support survivors

Dear Friend,

During this public health crisis, New Mexicans facing domestic abuse may encounter additional risk. The programs that work to reduce violence in our communities and ensure survivors get the essential support they need are facing unique challenges and being strained during this pandemic.

That's why I am calling on Congress to prioritize funding to support victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, including through programs in the Department of Justice authorized by the Violence Against Women Act.

If you or someone who you know is experiencing domestic violence or sexual abuse, I encourage you to please seek help as soon as you are able. You can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or text LOVEIS to 22522.

The National Network to End Domestic Violence developed a guide that offers tips on how you can help a friend or family member dealing with domestic abuse while also maintaining your safety during a public health crisis. You can also find additional online resources from the New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

We are all in this together throughout this crisis. Please not hesitate to contact my office if I can be of assistance.

Be well and stay healthy.

Sincerely,

MARTIN HEINRICH

United States Senator
