New Mexico senators visit US-Mexico border

EL PASO, Texas (KRQE) - U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich visited the border Friday, speaking out against the Trump administration's immigrant detention policies.

"This should've never happened in the first place. These kids should have never been separated from their families. That is the fundamental problem here, and this administration created a disaster of its own making," Sen. Heinrich said.

Udall, Heinrich and Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal, all Democrats, tried to tour a tent city for immigrant children in Tornillo, Texas, but were denied access.

Udall said President Trump's recent decision to end the policy of family separation isn't enough to address the humanitarian problem.

"We are talking about a camp like situation, internment camp situation for families, so that could be an absolute disaster, too," Sen. Udall said.

Friday night, the senators are holding a community event in Las Cruces.
