Defense Perimeter Tour, April 22, 2014

U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), who both serve on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, discussed how Quemado Lake Estates in Catron County, New Mexico, became a Firewise Community, and how homeowners are being proactive in protecting their homes from wildfires by building defense perimeters. Best practices include: trimmed trees, wet and low-cut grass, and keeping wood piles away from your home. The senators were briefed by Catron County Firewise Coordinator George Barreras. The visit was part of a day-long tour in Arizona and New Mexico focused on the senators' bipartisan efforts to address catastrophic wildfire prevention and recovery needs along the states' neighboring border and across the country.
