Heinrich Applauds Passage of National Security Supplemental

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) released the following statement after voting to pass a bipartisan supplemental package that will strengthen America's national security, support our democratic allies, and provide critical humanitarian assistance, including to Palestinian civilians in Gaza. The package includes the FEND Off Fentanyl Act, which Heinrich cosponsored, to tackle the opioid epidemic and protect New Mexico communities from fentanyl.

“Today, the United States is sending a strong message to the world that we stand firmly behind our allies in the fight for freedom and democracy.

“With this bipartisan legislation, we finally deliver urgently needed aid to the Ukrainian people as they defend themselves against Vladimir Putin. We stand with Israel against aggression from Iran, Hamas, and other Iran-backed extremists. We send critical humanitarian assistance to innocent civilians in Gaza. And we strengthen our national security to keep Americans safer at home and abroad.

“I’m especially pleased that this package includes our FEND Off Fentanyl Act to help address the fentanyl epidemic that’s killing New Mexicans and tearing families apart. By giving law enforcement the tools needed to crack down on drug traffickers and international criminal organizations, this bill will combat the flow of deadly fentanyl before it ever reaches our nation’s borders.

“Now that Congress has finally delivered, President Biden can sign this legislation into law.”
