Heinrich Applauds U.S. Postal Service Dramatically Increasing the Electrification of Mail Delivery Fleet

New actions announced today will sustain reliable mail service to Americans while modernizing the fleet, reducing operating costs, increasing clean air in our neighborhoods, creating jobs, and improving public health

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and co-chair of the Electrification Caucus, welcomed today’s announcement that the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will electrifying 75% of its new purpose-built Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDV) and commit to acquire 100% electric NGDVs starting in 2026. This is a significant increase from the 40% electric vehicle target that USPS announced earlier this year.

“I’m pleased that the U.S. Postal Service has listened to our calls to substantially increase their efforts to electrify the next generation of mail delivery vehicles. With funding that Democrats delivered in the historic Inflation Reduction Act and a commitment from the Biden administration, the next generation of mail delivery vehicles in America will now be 75% battery electric vehicles, and 100% electric starting in 2026,” said Heinrich. “Electrifying the transportation sector is among our greatest opportunities to tackle the climate crisis, clean up the air in our neighborhoods, provide a responsible return on taxpayer dollars, and send a powerful signal that the United States is leading in the transition toward a clean, efficient, and electric future.”

The U.S. government operates the largest vehicle fleet in the world, and USPS is the largest vehicle fleet in the Federal government. According to the announcement by the Biden-Harris Administration today, this $9.6 billion investment – which includes $3 billion in funding from the Inflation Reduction Act – installs modern charging infrastructure at hundreds of USPS facilities, electrifies 66,000 delivery vehicles, and modernizes mail delivery by creating a smarter network to more efficiently reach its 163 million delivery locations across the country and further strengthen the sustainability of this critical public service.

Background:
  • In November, Heinrich joined a joined a group of Democratic Senators to send a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and the USPS Board of Governors Chair Roman Martinez urging the Postal Service to use Inflation Reduction Act funding to increase vehicle electrification commitments and support workers.
  • In April, Heinrich led a group of 20 lawmakers who called on the Postal Service to accurately assess the cost of reliance on fossil fuels, which impacts national security and the climate crisis, as the agency prepares to update its vehicle fleet.
  • In February, Heinrich and U.S. Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.) led 17 of their Senate and House colleagues in a letter calling on Postmaster General DeJoy and the Chairman of the USPS Board of Governors to change the USPS procurement plan for its mail delivery vehicles and dramatically increase the electrification its mail delivery fleet.
  • In February 2021, Heinrich led 12 Senate Democratic colleagues in sending a letter to President Joe Biden, announcing forward-looking proposals to help the Biden administration ramp up the electrification of the overall federal vehicle fleet.
