Heinrich Headlines White House Electrification Summit; Touts Job-Creating, Cost-Saving Benefits Of Home Electrification

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), founder and co-chair of the Electrification Caucus, delivered opening remarks at the first-ever White House Electrification Summit. Senator Heinrich highlighted how a new rebate program he secured in the Inflation Reduction Act will make the cost-saving and health benefits of home electrification a reality for more Americans, while creating jobs and addressing the climate crisis. Thanks to this new program, over $87 million will be available to the State of New Mexico and Tribes in the state for communities to make homes more energy efficient, upgrade electric appliances, and cut energy costs.

The Summit was hosted by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Climate Policy Office, and Office of Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation, and convened energy and environmental leaders from government, industry, academia, and stakeholder groups to showcase the unprecedented opportunities for electrification created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act and have robust conversations about an updated electrification innovation strategy.

Senator Heinrich, a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, established a new rebate program in the Inflation Reduction Act that provides upfront, point-of-sale rebates for the purchase and installation of electric appliances and equipment in single-family homes and multifamily buildings, with additional support for low- and moderate- income households. In total, the landmark climate law includes $9 billion in point-of-sale consumer rebates to help families electrify and weatherize their homes.

The Inflation Reduction Act includes billions of dollars to supercharge our domestic manufacturing base for clean and electric technologies, ranging from batteries and wind turbines to solar panels and heat pumps. New federal investments and tax credits will also help heavy industry, small business owners, agricultural producers, Tribal governments, and affordable housing agencies electrify their operations.
