Heinrich, Luján Host Virtual Webinar Highlighting New Federal Transportation Funding Available Through Infrastructure Law

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) hosted a virtual information session for local government leaders in New Mexico on the historic transportation funding opportunities available through the recently passed Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

“My goal in hosting these sessions is to provide communities in New Mexico with the information that you need to make the most out of all of the formula and competitive funding that we worked so hard to pass in the historic Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act,” said Heinrich. “I see the Infrastructure Law as our shot to make transformational investments in New Mexico’s roads and bridges, our transit systems, our energy and water infrastructure, and our high-speed internet networks. I want to make sure we are doing everything we can to maximize these investments in every single corner of our state."

“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law secures $2.5 billion in federal highway assistance and $225 million for bridge replacement and repairs in New Mexico over five years,” said Luján. “President Biden’s signing of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act into law was a great victory, but it was also just the first step in getting the job done. We’ll get there when potholes are filled, roads are safer, airports are more efficient, and bridges are repaired. I look forward to working with state, Tribal, and local governments to deliver these funds to our local communities as quickly as possible.”

The webinar included representatives from the U.S. Department of Transportation, New Mexico Infrastructure Advisor Martin Chavez, and the New Mexico Department of Transportation.

The U.S. Department of Transportation just announced $2.9 billion in BIL funding for major infrastructure projects of regional or national significance. This funding opportunity combines three major discretionary grant programs into one grant opportunity. The programs included in this announcement are National Infrastructure Project Assistance (MEGA), the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America Program (INFRA), and the Rural Surface Transportation Grant Program (RURAL).
