Heinrich to Announce New AmeriCorps Funding for New Mexico

Media Teleconference Today at 2:15 p.m. MT

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will hold a media conference call today, Monday, May 5, at 2:15 p.m. MT (4:15 p.m. ET) to announce new grants for New Mexico that will support AmeriCorps members serving the community with local organizations.

Senator Heinrich, the first AmeriCorps alum to serve in the United States Senate, will be joined by Asim Mishra, also an AmeriCorps alum, and Chief of Staff for the Corporation of National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that that engages more than five million Americans in service through its AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, Social Innovation Fund, and Volunteer Generation Fund programs, and leads the President's national call to service initiative, United We Serve.

2014 marks the 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps. Over the past two decades, more than 830,000 men and women have served in the program, providing more than one billion hours of service to address critical challenges from poverty and hunger to disasters and the dropout crisis.
