Heinrich To Hear From Parents About Importance Of Medicaid, And Present A Bronze Star Medal

Senator Heinrich to discuss the importance of national parks and small businesses to the local economy, and meet with local veteran groups

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – On Tuesday, May 30 and Wednesday, May 31, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will be in Albuquerque to hear from New Mexico parents about the importance of Medicaid and present a Bronze Star Medal.

On Tuesday May 30, Senator Heinrich will be in the South Valley of Albuquerque to visit PB&J Family Services, a nationally recognized non-profit serving more than 1,100 at-risk families in New Mexico. Senator Heinrich will host a listening session to hear from New Mexicans who rely on Medicaid and have benefited from PB&J’s parent and child-focused services. Medicaid plays a key role in supporting the economic stability of families in New Mexico. Studies have shown that kids who are covered by Medicaid miss fewer days of school, are more likely to finish high school, attend college and earn more as adults. State Senator Michael Padilla will join Senator Heinrich at PB&J.

Senator Heinrich is a champion of Medicaid and an outspoken opponent of the Republicans’ health care bill and President Trump’s budget that would gut Medicaid and cut funding for vital social programs that New Mexicans rely on. Senator Heinrich also introduced the bipartisan Two-Generation Economic Empowerment Act, which aims to increase opportunities for families living in poverty by promoting programs that support both parents and children together.

On Wednesday May 31, Senator Heinrich will hold a medal ceremony at the New Mexico Veterans Memorial in Albuquerque to posthumously recognize Colonel Robert J. Fate, who was recommended for, but never received, a Bronze Star Medal for performing meritorious service during World War II. Senator Heinrich’s office worked with Fate’s family to resolve the Army paperwork issue to finally attain the service medal.
