Background:

The Living Schoolyards Act was reintroduced on May 10, 2023, by U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) to support schools as they re-envision their outdoor spaces and create more hands-on learning opportunities, strengthen local ecological systems, and give every child a place to learn and play outside.

The Universal School Meals Act was introduced on May 11, 2023, by U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to provide a permanent solution to end child hunger in schools by offering free breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack to all students, preschool through high school, regardless of income. For states like New Mexico, which has enacted a statewide universal school meals program, this legislation would provide federal funding for the expanded state school meals program.
