Heinrich To Speak At New Mexico Parent Teacher Association Convention, Commend Disabled American Veterans Advocate In Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will be in Albuquerque on Friday, May 6, to deliver remarks at the annual New Mexico Parent Teacher Association (NMPTA) Convention, and he will recognize a local veteran for his volunteer service to assist disabled veterans in Albuquerque.

On Friday morning, Senator Heinrich will speak at the New Mexico PTA's 101st Annual Convention. The event will feature local speakers, include informative workshops, and recognize NMPTA Proud! Awards winners. Last year, Senator Heinrich worked to pass the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) a bipartisan, bicameral bill to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The ESSA eliminates Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), which placed one-size-fits-all benchmarks on schools, and replaces it with a State-designed accountability system.

In the afternoon, Senator Heinrich will host a flag presentation ceremony to honor a veteran for his service to our nation and commitment to serve other fellow veterans. The former servicemember is a volunteer at Disabled American Veterans in Albuquerque, where he works to connect veterans to earned benefits. Senator Heinrich is committed to ensuring the United States keeps its promises to our men and women in uniform. Senator Heinrich worked to pass Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Fiscal Year 2016 Appropriations bill to help the U.S Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) make critical steps toward eliminating the veterans claims backlog.
