Heinrich To Stand With Taos Community To Defend National Monuments And Public Lands

SANTA FE, N.M. - On Tuesday, February 21, at 11 a.m. at the Taos Mesa Brewing, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will join a diverse coalition of community members, including Tribal leaders from the Taos Pueblo, and local small businesses to celebrate and stand up for the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument and all of New Mexico's public lands.

Senator Heinrich, a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, fought back against a bill reintroduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that would have sold off 3.3 million acres of public land, including 800,000 acres in New Mexico. Following a significant public backlash, Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) withdrew his bill.

Public land giveaway bills introduced in state legislatures across the West and increasingly in Congress, would devastate New Mexico's thriving outdoor recreation economy, which generates 68,000 jobs and $6.1 billion of annual economic activity.
