“Memorial Day provides us with an opportunity to pause and reflect on the generations of Americans who selflessly gave their lives to protect our nation. I am especially proud of the numerous contributions made by New Mexico service members. That includes the Navajo Code Talkers and Bataan Death March Survivors in World War II. The G.I.’s in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. And the men and women who have served in recent decades in Iraq and Afghanistan and at military installations in New Mexico and all around the globe. Mere words will never measure up to their incredible service or their immense sacrifices. Many of these men and women paid the ultimate sacrifice so all of us can enjoy the freedoms that we cherish. We should also pause to honor military families—especially those who lost a loved one, and those who continue to care for a veteran. On this Memorial Day, I join all New Mexicans, and all Americans, in recognizing our fallen heroes and honoring those who continue to serve today at home and abroad.”
