Heinrich Statement On President Biden’s State Of The Union

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) released the following statement after attending President Joe Biden’s first State of the Union address:

“It makes a world of difference to have steady, moral leadership back in the White House. President Biden’s actions and achievements are the driving force in a great American comeback story.

“When he took office, President Biden inherited a whole host of generational challenges—from a once-in-a-century pandemic and an economy in freefall to the mounting natural disasters caused by the climate crisis and the alarming rise of anti-democratic forces both at home and abroad.

“Over the last year, the President and Democrats in Congress has ushered through historic economic rescue and infrastructure laws that are fueling the fastest job creation in American history, the largest drop in the unemployment rate on record, and the fastest economic growth in the last four decades. The Biden administration stood up a successful national vaccine campaign, we welcomed students and teachers back to school, and helped employees and small business owners get back to work. In the face of unprovoked Russian aggression, President Biden has also united our allies behind the Ukrainian people and in defense of our democratic values. He has reestablished America’s role as the leader of the free world.

“In his speech, the President acknowledged the challenges that many families continue to face and called on Congress to work with him to lower the costs of prescription drugs, child care, energy, and health care. He also called on Democrats and Republicans to come together to make progress on areas where we can find agreement like improving care for veterans, addressing the mental health crisis and opioid addiction epidemic, and investing in cancer research. We also urgently need to find a way forward on investments that will make a real difference in the type of planet we will pass down to our kids and to future generations.

“I see this moment as an inflection point—a chance to turn the page on the status quo. If we can make strategic investments and empower our resilient communities to succeed, America will emerge from this moment in a stronger competitive position than ever before.”
