Heinrich Statement On Russia Sanctions

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement after the House of Representatives voted 419-3 to approve legislation, which has been long opposed by the Trump administration, sanctioning Russia, Iran and North Korea:

“Expanding sanctions against Russia sends a strong message that there will be real consequences for undermining our democratic process. President Trump’s reluctance to take Russia’s hacking into our election seriously is deeply troubling. But the President will soon be forced to make a choice: to embrace a muscular response to an attack on the United States or cave to Vladimir Putin. The world will be watching.”

Similar sanctions legislation previously passed the Senate by a vote of 98-2.
