New Mexicans Tell Their Health Care Stories

Dear Friend,

Today, while Senate Republicans unveiled their latest disastrous health care proposal, I shared stories I have received from New Mexico families in a Medium post. I have heard from thousands of New Mexicans who have told me how important health care coverage is to them and their families. Their stories emphasize the real lives that are at stake if the Medicaid program is destroyed as it currently exists, if rural hospitals have to close, or if funding for mental health and opioid addiction treatment is slashed.

MEDIUM: U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich shares New Mexico health care stories, July 13, 2017.

Republicans' latest health care scheme threatens to throw our entire health care system into chaos. Nearly everyone will be subjected to higher costs for lower quality insurance, especially those with pre-existing conditions like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease who would see their health care costs skyrocket or possibly lose coverage altogether.

Last week, I held a press conference in Albuquerque with local and statewide advocates to highlight the damaging impact Senate Republicans' health care legislation will have in New Mexico, particularly in rural communities and for women, low-income families, seniors, children, and people with pre-existing conditions.

This is not a game. This is a matter of life and death. Yet, President Trump and Republicans continue to ignore millions of Americans who are saying loud and clear that it's time to stop this train wreck in its tracks. I will keep telling New Mexicans' stories and do everything I can to oppose this appalling legislation. We must keep up the fight to ensure quality health care is accessible and affordable for all of our families and communities.

Sincerely,

MARTIN HEINRICH

United States Senator
