ADVISORY for AUG 7: Heinrich Announces Local Food Tour

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will kick off a local food tour on Wednesday, August 7, to highlight the success and variety of New Mexico’s local farms and agriculture-related products, and emphasize the economic and health benefits of supporting strong local food systems.

On Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., Senator Heinrich will tour Three Sisters Kitchen in Albuquerque. Three Sisters Kitchen is designed to create a space for people to come together to cook, eat, teach, test new recipes, and develop new food businesses. The site contains a café, test kitchen, dining hall, and classroom. Senator Heinrich will learn about Three Sisters’ FreshRX program, which is aimed at ending food insecurity in New Mexico communities.

At 12:45 p.m., Senator Heinrich will tour Urban Rebel Farms in Santa Fe, a microgreen farm delivering over 30 varieties of living microgreen trays, including amaranth, chives, and mustard, to businesses in New Mexico. Senator Heinrich will tour the facility to learn about its hydroponic cultivation method, which is vegan, chemical-free, and GMO-free.

At 1:30 p.m., Senator Heinrich will tour Reunity Resources in Santa Fe, a nonprofit and community farm that turns waste from local schools and restaurants into high-nutrient compost then sold to area gardeners and farmers. Reunity Resources operates the Reunity Farm, which emphasizes access to local food by donating 10,000 pounds of produce to northern New Mexico food banks and shelters annually, in addition to offering produce for sale to the general public.

At 3 p.m., Senator Heinrich will end the day at the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market. Regularly voted among the top ten markets in the country, the Santa Fe Farmers’ market hosts up to 130 local farmers and producers from 15 northern New Mexico counties. The market’s producers exclusively sell agricultural products grown themselves. Senator Heinrich will meet with a variety of these local vendors.

Senator Heinrich supported the 2018 Farm Bill, which serves as the federal government’s primary tool to provide agricultural funding and set food policy. In July, Senator Heinrich introduced the Native American Seeds Protection Act of 2019, which would direct the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to study applicable trademark and intellectual property laws and the long-term viability of Native American seeds. The bill aims to clearly identify ways to protect traditional Native American food products and agricultural practices.
