Heinrich To Volunteer At Meals On Wheels Of Albuquerque, Visit CNM And UNM Campuses For Discussions On STEM And Health Careers

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - On Wednesday, April 19, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will join Meals on Wheels of Albuquerque to help prepare meals for the local community. Senator Heinrich will later visit students at Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) for a discussion on careers in health care and then tour University of New Mexico (UNM) programs funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Wednesday morning, Senator Heinrich will help prepare meals at Meals on Wheels of Albuquerque to recognize the importance of the vital program in the community. Meals on Wheels of Albuquerque serves approximately 500 people in the region, delivering over 130,000 meals a year. Meals on Wheels has programs that operate throughout New Mexico, including in Santa Fe, Portales, Farmington, Alamogordo, and Las Cruces.

Senator Heinrich will then host a roundtable with students and faculty at the CNM campus to discuss careers in health care, highlighting the thousands of jobs and economic activity the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid expansion have brought to the state. In the last five years, the health care sector has been the strongest area of job growth in New Mexico. Many of these jobs are in rural communities, where jobs are needed most.

Following that event, Senator Heinrich will be at the UNM campus to meet with researchers and faculty to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math(STEM) programs and tour an environmental engineering lab that are recipients of NSF funding. The National Science Foundation has funded cutting-edge research programs at UNM including a recent $1.6 million award to train STEM students and workers for jobs in microsystems technology. Senator Heinrich has been working with community colleges and universities across the state to take concrete steps to build an education and training pipeline to prepare New Mexico students and workers for science and engineering jobs.

Later that evening, Senator Heinrich will be hosting a town hall meeting in the South Valley in Albuquerque to answer questions and discuss critical issues facing New Mexico.
