Heinrich To Highlight Community-Driven Economic Development, Meet With Veterans In Los Alamos And Española

Senator Heinrich to discuss the importance of national parks and small businesses to the local economy, and meet with local veteran groups

SANTA FE, N.M. - On Friday, May 26 and Saturday, May 27, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will travel to Los Alamos and Española. During his visit, he will make a special announcement about the Manhattan Project National Historical Park and host a discussion on the economic impact of New Mexico’s growing craft beer and wine industries to highlight new ways to diversify the local economy. Senator Heinrich will also meet with local veteran organizations and the USS Los Alamos Committee to recognize the contributions of the Los Alamos community to our nation.

Beginning in the evening at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in Los Alamos, Senator Heinrich will attend Russ Gordon’s Los Alamos Summer Concert Series. He will deliver brief remarks recognizing Russ Gordon, the owner of local small business Gordon’s CD’s Tapes & Records and longtime host of the concert series. For 28 years, the concert series has been a pillar of the community in northern New Mexico, bringing together families, neighbors and friends each weekend to listen to local, national and internationally renowned musicians.

On Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. in Los Alamos, Senator Heinrich will join the Superintendent of Manhattan Project National Historical Park Kris Kirby to make a special announcement and highlight how national parks impact the local economy and help support small businesses. Through his work on the Energy and Natural Resources committee, Senator Heinrich helped pass legislation to establish the Manhattan Project National Historical Park in 2015. The park will conserve historic sites and artifacts that played a key role in the dawn of the nuclear era, and help tell the story of the creation of the world's first atomic bomb and its consequences for society.

Later that morning at 10:30 a.m. in Los Alamos, Senator Heinrich will convene a conversation hosted by American Legion Post 90 with VFW Post 8874 and the USS Los Alamos Committee. Senator Heinrich is committed to ensuring our nation keeps its promises to veterans and their families. He's led the effort to reduce the VA disability claims backlog and worked to improve access to health care. The USS Los Alamos Commissioning Committee has led an ongoing community effort to name a Navy submarine “USS Los Alamos” in honor of Los Alamos’s contributions to the United States Navy. In December of last year, Senator Heinrich convened a meeting between the USS Los Alamos Committee and Navy Leadership to advocate for the future USS Los Alamos. In March, Senator Heinrich introduced a resolution with U.S. Senator Tom Udall to urge the Secretary of the Navy to dedicate the next nuclear-powered submarine to the longstanding relationship between the Navy and the entire Los Alamos community.

On Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. in Española, Senator Heinrich will visit Blue Heron Brewing Company’s taproom in Española to host a discussion with Blue Heron owners Scott and Kristin Hennelly, the New Mexico Brewers Guild, Vivac Winery, the New Mexico Wine Growers Association, and Vine and Wine Society on the economic impact of New Mexico’s booming local beer and wine industries. The craft brewing industry is one of the fastest growing industries in New Mexico, employing over 3,000 people and contributing $340 million to the state’s economy. Earlier this year, Senator Heinrich signed the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act of 2017 that would lower the federal excise tax on the brewing industry and includes provisions related to wine and spirits in order to help small businesses, spur job creation, and incentivize continued growth of the brewing industry.
