Heinrich To Tour Biofuel Facility At New Mexico State University

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will tour the Algae Cultivation Testbed facility at New Mexico State University (NMSU) on Wednesday, May 1. The testbed  offers both outdoor and greenhouse facilities designed specifically for research and development around optimizing algal biofuel production, including algae-based aviation fuels.  The facility was established in 2010 with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).  Senator Heinrich will meet with NMSU faculty and graduate students and tour the facility with Dr. Pete Lammers, Technical Director, NMSU Energy Research Laboratory;  and Vimal Chaitanya, Vice President for Research, Graduate Studies, and International Programs.

Sen. Heinrich, a member of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, is a strong advocate for the use of renewable biofuels and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, and is the only engineer in the United States Senate.
