Heinrich To Travel To Doña Ana, Grant, And Otero Counties

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will travel to Doña Ana, Grant, and Otero Counties beginning tomorrow, Friday, May 23, to discuss New Mexico's outdoor recreation economy, wildfire and recovery efforts, and meet with veterans and  military families.

On Friday, Senator Heinrich will join the community of Doña Ana County in Las Cruces to celebrate the designation of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. The Establishment of this new national monument is the culmination of a decade of involvement from the local community. Senator Heinrich attended the proclamation signing ceremony where he shared the stage with local New Mexico leaders. Retired U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman, U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.), U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, and Acting Chair of the Council on Environmental Quality Mike Boots will also attend and speak at the celebration event.

On Saturday morning, Senator Heinrich will deliver remarks at the celebration of the 90th Anniversary of the Gila Wilderness and the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act in Silver City.  Senator Heinrich, a member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, is a lead proponent in protecting New Mexico's public lands.

On Saturday afternoon, Senator Heinrich will tour the Signal Fire site in the Gila National Forest and meet with U.S. Forest Service staff to discuss the firefighting and recovery effort. The Signal Fire started burning in grass and timber nearly 10 miles north of Silver City on May 11, 2014. Recently, Senator Heinrich launched an online Wildfire Preparedness and Prevention Resource Center on his website to provide critical information about how to protect communities from the devastating effects of wildfires.

On Monday, Senator Heinrich will commemorate Memorial Day with veterans and military families in Tularosa. Senator Heinrich, a staunch supporter of veterans and military families, will participate in a wreath ceremony and deliver remarks honoring our fallen heroes.
