Heinrich To Announce Congressional Funding For New Mexico Tech’s Magdalena Ridge Observatory

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will tour New Mexico Tech’s Magdalena Ridge Observatory on Friday, August 11, 2017 at 11 a.m. to announce congressional funding secured in the FY17 budget and meet with students to discuss the importance of New Mexico Tech’s leadership in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

During his visit, Senator Heinrich will announce congressional funding he helped secure in the FY17 budget to help build the Magdalena Ridge Observatory Interferometer. When complete, the ten telescopes of MROI will be arrayed in a Y-shape and will be able to achieve a resolution 100 times greater than the Hubble Telescope. The Magdalena Ridge Observatory serves as a major research tool for New Mexico Tech students and faculty. The MRO facility also helps track space vehicles for Air Force Research Laboratories in New Mexico.
